I've seen some extraordinary tributes to him on the net in the past couple of hours. He might have redefined the meaning of "epic" in the term "epic fantasy", but bless him for this - he was the inspiration and the leading light for many a reader to take a first unsteady step into fantasy land. For that alone, he deserves remembrance - being a beacon for an entire genre of fandom is no small thing to achieve in a man's lifetime.
