December 31st, 2010

The old year that passes...

Others have posted retrospectives, and resolutions. I... don't think I'll do either.

But just so as to give the nod to the date and the moment, I went back over 2010 as it unfolded in my LiveJournal - and picked one favourite entry per month.

Here they are:

January an essay on faith, and on my own relationship with the sacred. This was a good month; I could have picked any one of three or four pieces - but this one, I think, stood out as special.

February a rumination of why people read.

March - "Not ALL plans went according to plan" - an account of an extraordinary visit to New York

April a good old fashioned writing rant!

May - "The annual V.E.T. visit" - what would life be without a dose of cats?

June - eh, another good old-fashioned and writing-related rant...

July this was the month of my "July Blogathon" where I posted a number of good long essays - makes it hard to pick - but I had to pick one, and it finally turned out to be THIS one - if you go back to July and poke around, perhaps you'll disagree - if so tell me in comments! [grin]

August - another nod to my less-than-ordinary childhood....

September - oh, I am not ALWAYS passionate and ranty and serious and memoir-ey. Sometimes I am just... frivolous. Remember this one? Have another giggle...

October - this one.... was just... inspired.

November - I started my Month of Museums series in this month, but I can always go back to that come December - so I picked THIS one - I mirrored it to Red Room, where it got picked for display for their front page - so there you go. You read it first right here.

December - one of my favourite "Month of Museums" pieces

So, those are my picks. What about yours? Do you agree with my choices? Would you have picked something different? If you had to pick one out of all of that as the Best of 2010, which one would you choose?

Life With Cats, New Year's Eve Edition

Me: Hey, kittens! Happy new year, real soon! You just turned seven a few days ago - you're gonna be EIGHT at the end of this year - wanna be kittens for a little longer? Wanna play? Here - dangle - SHINY!!!

Cat 1 (lying with her belly against the heater, all four feet underneath, looking up and yawning): Whuh? Whut was that? Someone dangle a ribbon at my nose?

Cat 2 (in window cradle, looking vaguely uneasy): Noises? Noises out?...

Me. Just fireworks. Want to come play?

Cat 1: Lady, it's TWENTY THREE DEGREES OUTSIDE. If you ask me, it isn't much warmer in here. Why can't you crank up the thermostat up to 70? Yes, 70. That would be good.

Cat 2 (still unconvinced): But there's NOISES.

Me (resignedly): Ribbon? Pretty dangly shiny thing? Ribbon?...

Cat 1: Look, I'll be in later - whenEVER you decide to go to bed - and I'll be under the covers. You may pet me then. If you're still awake. Until then... please... it's nice and warm. We'll save the ribbons for another time. There, there, I can pretend to be a kitten later on. Right now, I'm warm, and I'm SLEEPING. See you later.

Me: But *I* will be sleeping later...

Cat 1 (putting head back down and closing eyes): Mmmmfmmmmrow.

Cat 2: ...noises...?

Well. I'm off to watch a bit of silly TV, waiting for the witching hour to come round. See you all next year.
