Flotsam and jetsam from New York

THIS is SO COOL. It's pricy - rooms start at mid-$200 mark and go up like a New York skyscraper - but dear GOD it's so cool.

I think I'll send them a set of my books to stuff in their Children's Lit room [grin] It's simply irresistible. I'd love to stay here even if just for a night - I wandered in off the street because it intrigued me, and their LOBBY IS A LIBRARY.You gotta love it.

And then, just because I am bent that way, I noted down a couple of funny signs and sign juxtapositions while I was there. Sorry, hadn't brought my camera so no pictures, but here's a sampling I jotted down in my notebook:

ON ONE OD THOSE "WE SELL EVERYTHING" WHOLESALE TYPE SHOPS IN THE SIDE STREETS, JUST OFF 6TH AVE:

"NO credit
NO exchange
NO refun"

(Have your fun the first time round. We're sorry it didn't work out for you if you fail. No refun. Fun will be had once only or not at all)

ON A STOREFRONT WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT HASN'T BEEN USED FOR A WHILE, THERE IS A CURLING "FOR RENT" SIGN IN THE WINDOW AND THE PLACE YAWNS EMPTY BUT THE REMAINS OF THE SIGN OF THE OLD BUSINESS ARE STILL ABOVE THE STORE:

"[C]OUCH HOUSE"

(The C is missing, or faded, or something - there's the barest ghost of an outline to let you know what was SUPPOSED to be there. What's left reads "ouch house". My mind immediately leaps to a kindergarten that caters to the kids of the S&M crowd. Learn about pain and how to enjoy it when you're still young...)

ON AN ESTABLISHMENT ON UPTOWN BROADWAY:

"Broadway Extermination - Sales, Do It Yourself, Service"

(Yes, it's a pest control place. But my first thought was on how one could possibly plan a do-it-yourself extermination of Broadway...)

ON A TWO-STOREY BUILDING IN HARLEM:

Upper story sign: "Uncle Larry's Pet Supplies"
Lower story sign: "North Harlem Halal Meat""

(And, being particularly bloody-minded about inadvertent juxtapositions, I am left wondering if the pets in question are particularly religious... or if they are the meat...)

So long, NYC. Until next time.
