book and glasses

A couple of writerly linkys

Holly Lisle is running a How To Think Sideways writing course aimed at teaching both novices and more experienced folk who might find themselves struggling how to deal with this writing career lark. She's currently got a survey up and running as to how much it costs the AUTHOR to complete a novel, and the results are somewhat startling. You'd better have something to invest if you start out on this path.

There are some things there that I don't particularly agree on - I think she might be one of those writecritters devoted to planning and outlining rather than the way I do it - but then, planning and outlining you can reliably teach, instinct and seat-of-pants writing is harder to get across, particularly in an environment that isn't face-to-face. A course like this might indeed be something that someone with writerly aspirations might find useful - you might never plan a book but at least you will have the know-how to do it if you need to.

Another site that might be of use is the newly-launched American Writer - disclaimer, I am one of the writers who is working for these people now, and I might be considered to have a vested interest, but I have to say up-front that I would not have associated myself with a shady operation and if I ever get an inkling that it's straying from the straight and narrow I will take appropriate action. But they've got a respectable list of writers who are on board to act as critiquers for people wanting this service for their manuscripts - and their reports are contractually required (I know, I have a contract) to be full, complete, and detailed. You will NOT get a pat on the head and told to rush this baby off to PublishAmerica. You will get told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. (And yes, you can ask for a specific editor if you want - it doesn't GUARANTEE that you will get that person but you can ask)

There. Information. Go forth and write, now.
