Sense of wonder

Back from Narnia.

I mean that literally [grin] It really WAS that good.

Let me count the ways. The lamp-post in the middle of the wood is one of the most enduring images of enchantment ever made, anywhere. Mr Tumnus was absolutely perfect in every way (down to stamping the snow off his little hooves - beautiful little touch!) and the centaurs looked like they might, if you stared long enough, turn around and snap "What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a centaur before?" The Beavers were utterly lovely, and the Fox, I want to hug the Fox and kiss him right there on that trickster snout of his. I LOVE the Narnia version of instant hot chocolate (even though it WAS the White Witch who did it, which makes it suspect, I guess...)

And Aslan... I wept at Aslan. In pure unadulterated joy and awe. He was all that he should have been, and then some.

I heard various things before I went and I was looking out for them - the emergence out of those initial roiling clouds not of anything magical but of a very real and very deadly squadron of German bombers in a World War II sky over London is a beautiful piece of theatre. But the other thing that I was looking for and had been told about was little Lucy. Someone, I don't recall who, called her performance in this movie "luminous", and that's exactly what it was. And it was that childlilke sense of wonder that was glowing from her like a light when she first stepped into the snowy wood that never leaves the movie. It was one of the few films I've been to that was greeted with spontaneous applause in the movie theatre when the end credits began to roll.

This one's a keeper. I'll be going to see it again, ASAP.

On a related note...

Just got my advance ccopies of the Australian edition of "Embers of Heaven". It looks GREAT. Out in stores Down Under on Wednesday of next week, if shop talk is to be believed.

Am all fluttery. This "I have a new book out!" feeling just doesn't go away... [huge goofy grin]
