He was hunting one of my resident squirrels. RIGHT THERE ON MY DECK. Right in front of my eyes. As I was having supper and staring right at him.
My heart just stopped. When I got my breath back I rushed out to save my pet squirrel - it was Cheeky, the little Douglas squirrel who is a resident at the feeder - and the owl settled on a nearby branch on the neighbor's cedar and stared at me for a full half minute, and then did that weird owl thing where they twist their heads around 180 degrees, looked around, and fell off the branch in a silent wide-winged swoop, away into the twilight and the shadows.
I'm still wide-eyed.
